How are hernia and Pregnancy related?

This is a question asked by a woman via the babybellyband youtube video.... http://www.youtube.com/user/BABYBELLYBAND

Great question.  During pregnancy, the weight of the fetus puts pressure on the groin area.  If one has a week abdominal muscle wall, a hernia can occur (a hernia is when the muscle wall is weakened and the intestines or organs which are usually held in by the muscle, push through causing a protrusion).  The most common hernia with pregnancy is an inguinal hernia which protrudes in the groin area.  During my pregnancy I developed an inguinal hernia and the result was very uncomfortable.  I could not walk comfortably with out pushing on the hernia to give it support, nor could I lift my other children without extreme pain.  I was very fit and athletic and did not gain a huge amount of weight, it was just that my groin area muscle wall perhaps separated or was weak ( my mother also has hernais so perhaps muscle wall weakness is genetic).    Wearing support, like the Babybellyband, helps not only lessen the damage of a hernia, but relieve the discomfort and allow a woman to lead a normal, active life: working, walking, carrying other children, without so much pain. After I birthed my child, the hernia disappeared.  This often happens although in more extreme cases, the hernia must be repaired after pregnancy.   .

Pregnancy Blues

I am amazed at how many  pregnant woman tell me that their OB/GYN or midwife has informed them that there is "nothing they can do" about their ailments during pregnancy.  Because my company, Cabea, llc, is in the field of pregnancy and hernia support wear, most of the comments I hear from women are related to hernia, vulvar varicosity, abdominal, or lower back discomfort.  The women I speak with are mostly "highly self motivated" because they are online searching for a solution to their problems for which they have been told, their is no relief.  I think of all the women who are not this self-motivated and how they are suffering with blues or discomforts for which there are solutions.  We as women must help each other in spreading the word that there is help from pregnancy discomforts or the serious blues that one can encounter when the hormones go baserk.  Here are websites for this kind of help:

Oh my achin' Back

Most women experience some type of lower back pain during pregnancy.  I mean really, how often do you go around with an extra 20lbs strapped to the front of your belly?  Lower back pain is the bodies response to the added weight you are carrying as well as ligaments loosening with hormonal changes in pregnancy.
To relieve some of this discomfort I have created Cabea Babybellyband an abdominal support band with superior support.  The band is Velcro adjustable so no matter how large your belly grows, the band ...<< MORE >>

Round Ligament Pain Relief

Frequent to pregnancy is round ligament pain. I want to post a testimonial which I think is really important especially to working moms.

"As a registered nurse the Belly Band has become an essential piece of my wardrobe. Working twelve hour shifts this has provided the support needed to get through the day. By gently lifting the abdomen and distributing the weight evenly it relieves pressure and alleviates uncomfortable round ligament pain. With adjustable and removable straps the belly band is perfect for all stages of pregnancy!"

Pregnant with pain in the groin!!

When I was pregnant in my 6th month, by the end of the day I was doubled over with pain in my groin area. Lurking there was an inguinal hernia. (also can be mimicking round ligament varicosities). I could not walk without holding in the bulge. Not fun. This is why I developed Cabea Babybellyband with under band support. The under bands Velcro on to the Babybellyband so you can snug them up to give as much support as you need. The relief is fantastic, ...<< MORE >>

Help Vulvar varicosities!!!

Yickes, what is going on down yonder!  We can talk candidly because if you are reading this you are probably a woman!  During pregnancy so much pressure can be on crotch area that the veins swell and look and feel awful, technically these are called vulvar varicosities.   Some women will come right out and talk about this newly found, unwelcome friend, but other women, who are more conservative about discussing the vulvar area, won't say a word and will experience their whole pregnancy in pain.  Don't worry, you are not alone and there ...<< MORE >>

Welcome to Cabea Babybellyband Blog

Hi,
I am Caroline, inventor of the Babybellyband.  I created this abdominal, back and groin support product based on my own needs as a pregnant mom. I had painful inguinal hernias, one sister had vulvar varicosities, we (5 of us) all had round ligament pain, back pain, you name it, we had it. In addition,my babies were quite large, one was 10.5 lbs at birth, and my sister who was 5'4" and 110lbs, had an 11.5lb baby. Can you imagine! She was enormous!  Who knows why we had such large babies, but whatever the cause, many ailments came with those babes. Having found very limited support products on the market I decided I wanted to create a product for women with strong support, style, color choice, versatility, and ease of use.  Cabea's Babybellyband was born.   In addition, I wanted to educate women about their choice to wear support products during pregnancy to prevent or relieve pregnancy difficulties such as those mentioned above and more. During my 1st pregnancy, I was told by my doctor to just deal with all these ailments,"they are part of pregnancy and will be over in 9 months" she said. During my 2nd and 3rd pregnancy I had a midwife who encouraged me to find a support product. The difference in wearing support and not was tremendous. My family benefited because I was more comfortable. My body and mind benefited because I was not in such discomfort. I encourage all women to wear a support product during pregnancy, especially during exercise, or while lifting other children, or if you are standing on your feet all day, or have multiple fetuses.
You will have a more enjoyable pregnancy.  Please feel free to share stories or comments on Cabeas' Babybellyband Blog.  We need to support each other during pregnancy!! and beyond.

With best wishes for a smooth labor and delivery. Caroline
